Trusting the Therapy Process
Welcome! When potential clients reach out and ask how this “therapy thing” works, there are a couple of different answers that I could give. However, I often turn that question around on them and ask what it is that YOU are seeking from therapy. Whether this is your first time seeking therapy or if you have been in therapy previously, each experience can be very different and nerve-wracking. Kudos to you in deciding that no matter how scary it seems to open up to a complete stranger, you will “trust the process”.
I’ll be referring to the term, “trust the process”, in many of the blogs that I have written/will write because therapy is literally a “process”. It consists of hard work and dedication to attend sessions, work on “homework” that is assigned in session as well as critical thinking in recognizing negative patterns of thought. There are not any “shortcuts” in therapy but building on each session and making steady progress each week is my goal for all of my clients. I want my clients to feel that they are making progress every session, whether it is leaving with skills on how to minimize anxious feelings or an action plan on how to combat depressive symptoms.
Trusting the therapy process goes hand in hand with trusting the therapist. But therein lies the issue as in order to build trust, you would need to open up to a therapist but in order to open up to a therapist, you need to build trust. So again we refer to “trusting the process” and trusting that we will always go at your own pace. I make a point to ask clients if they feel comfortable sharing and I also encourage clients to share when they are feeling rushed and are not ready to share certain details of their life.
